The USCCB batting 1000

Diogenes points out another problematic movie review by the USCCB. In case there are any Catholics out there who are still guided by the movie reviews, and judging from the Harry Potter question there are a lot out there, here you go.

The title of the movie is "Loverboy". It's list of questionable elements:

Promiscuity, some brief sexual encounters, artificial insemination, partial rear and upper female nudity, breastfeeding, some crude language, an act of animal cruelty, suicide, and murder attempt.

This film is rated L for limited adult audience. Naturally those who would oppose the breastfeeding I imagine.

From Brokeback Mountain to The Passion of the Christ to Loverboy, at least they are consistent, though consistently wrong. The entire review is here.

Aren't Catholics supposed to be loyal to bishops and archbishops?

Well, loyalty is a loaded word. If Catholics followed the lead of many of the Bishops, say, hiding the sex scandals over the years, where would we be???

One has to use common sense when available, and make a decision based on the true spirit of real Catholicism, which is not always the bishops' choice. When there is obvious error, we would be commiting sin if we followed their lead. Sadly, we must admit that the bishops ain't what they used to be! The adjectives - weak, mediocre, impotent, vacillating, dishonest come to mind.

It is sadly not like the old days, when the word of the Bishop was true and certainly to be adhered to. We must be very vigilant to discern good from evil.

The bishops are ordained by God and are guided by the holy spirit. How do YOU know when your common sense is guided by the holy spirit or when it is guided by the Evil One?

How I KNOW is when what the bishops say is in direct contradiction to what has been taught throughout the ages in the Catholic Church. For instance, if the bishops said that gay marriage was acceptable, a Catholic must not take this as Church teaching. Or if,say, they pronounce that a movie isn't objectionable when I KNOW that it is in essence set up as an occasion of sin for Catholics, I must not follow the errant bishops' lead.
The Bishops may in fact be 'ordained by God' (though many bishops are ordained because they are particular friends of other bishops and not chosen for their Faith and Prayer life)but they are NOT perfect and NOT infallable. That is as clear as I can put it. Hope that helps.

Kina, infallibility has never applied to the bishops conference. Surely you would not have us blindly support the bishops who covered up sex abuse?

If you can't usually trust the bishops (judging by this post about USCCB you can't). What's the point of having them?
Several protestant groups started in reaction to this kind of thing and it looks like the Catholic church still hasn't fixed up corruption in their higher-level clergy yet.

Corruption will always be there- we are all sinful.

However, we have an assurance from Christ that the Church won't fall.

That assurance is built upon the sacred truths held in the Magisterium.

While it is an immense oversimplification, the general rule of thumb is that when a bishops speaks his office entitles him to a certain amount of credibility. However, what he says must still be weighed against the Sacred Magisterium. This constant examination has proven that certain bishops are fools and others are saintly.

The reform efforts that are entitled to the laity is not to push for crap like women's ordination, but rather to demand orthodoxy from the clergy and the rest of the faithful.

Protestants weigh nothing against nothing. They take their own beliefs and weight them against their own biblical interpretations- how hard is it to win an argument against yourself?

Hey dude (insert beavis & butthead laugh).
Why stop at the bishops? Throw all the Catholics in.
