She's Come Undone

Has she finally gone too far? Will she be excommunicated for blasphemy? It took Sinead O'Connor being "ordained" for her to be excommunicated. Nice to see Muslim and Jewish leaders join in the denunciation. That's my kind of ecumenism.

From the article:

Cardinal Ersilio Tonino, speaking with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI said: "This time the limits have really been pushed too far.

"This concert is a blashphemous challenge to the faith and a profanation of the cross. She should be excommunicated."

"It is disrespectful, in bad taste and provocative," Father Manfredo Leone from Rome's Santa Maria Liberatrice church said late on Wednesday about the star's latest stage stunt.

"Being raised on a cross with a crown of thorns like a modern Christ is absurd. Doing it in the cradle of Christianity comes close to blasphemy."

She can't be excommunicated because she's not Catholic. She practices Kabbahla (or whatever it's called -- it's all the rage in Hollywood).

Hmmm. I sense that you're a bit jealous that "the 47-year-old singer's revealing outfit only highlighted her incredibly toned body." Check out the gallery photos on that post! Wow.

Interesting comment Chocolate but she was baptized and raised Catholic. I suppose the same is true of Sinead O'Connor. At the moment she was "ordained" she was no longer Catholic but the designation of excommunication is helpful to those in the Church to show it's disapproval of her actions.

She might have been raised Catholic, but she has already left the church and joined another religion. Only Catholics can be excommunicated.
So, the Vatican can issue statements of disapproval but they can't excommunicate her any more than they can excommunicate the Dali Lama.

Who is this woman?

It's just weird. Blasphemous too but I just look at it and say "why?"

It is the Cardinal who mentioned excommunication- not me. I suppose he knows what he is talking about.

" The photos are disgusting "
Judging by the comments on the newsite, you alone hold that view.

He might be assuming she is still Catholic. I doubt if he has kept up with her religious history.

Not true. Once you are baptized into the faith you belong to it. You don't just "change religions". This is divine will, not human. It's like saying that you have your Original Sin back because you are nullifying your baptism. You can't do it.

However, if she has publicly professed another faith, I believe there is a form of "automatic excommunication" incurred. (Is it called latae sententiae? I'm not sure)

Madonna was the oldest child born to a Catholic family but lost her mother to breast cancer when she was about five or six years old. Her father remarried and now has a total of eight children.

I've often thought Madonna's public sins are related to her anger at God for taking her mother from her. She has certainly left lots of evidence to that effect, including the sexual decadence with tones of religion. She acts like she is trying to get back at God in any way she can--and she certainly thinks up some doozies!

I've been praying for several years for the conversion of Madonna, and hoped it would happen sooner. Now she is approaching 50 years old, and if she really repents, how many people will believe her? Most people will believe it is another publicity stunt by an elderly actress/singer who has no other way to attract attention.

We should refer to the artist as Ms. Ciccone.

She's calling for attention and she probably has deep seated problems.

I recently heard she dropped the Karbala bit.

yes, it is possible to formally leave the Catholic church. I won't go into the details but you can ask your local priest or read about it on the Web.

Kylemore Abbey where her daughter Lourdes is going is going to close down. Last time I was there we ran into a girl sneaking cigarettes. Pretty funnny. I wonder of it was her?

"I doubt that her daughter would do such a thing as sneak cigarettes."

I agree. She and her daughter are very, very health conscious.

Perhaps rob is referring to the indelible mark which the soul receives at Baptism, and which will make the suffering of such an individual in Hell so much more heinous.
Ex-Catholics do not suffer in Hell.
Catholics do so horribly.
I truly hope and pray she may obtain final repentance, for she has a greater claim on Jesus' mercy than most of us.

"Ex-Catholics do not suffer in Hell"

Why not? That doesn't fit with anything I heard at my church.

Because there is no such thing as an "ex"-Catholic.
See my earlier statement about the INDELIBLE mark received in the soul at Baptism.
I am not speaking here 'culturally'; I am referring to a very tenacious (howbeit metaphysical) reality.

" INDELIBLE mark received in the soul at Baptism."
That is true, but it is the mark of a Christian, not of a Catholic. Baptists, Lutherans, etc. receive the same mark on their soul at Baptism.

Someone can formally leave the Catholic Church and become a Lutheran (for example). In which case they are an ex-Catholic.

Interesting. Now there's a stumper.
I must consult with a Priest that I know, and read some more on this issue, for I certainly do not want to get bogged down in some sort of wordplay.
I never thought of it that way before.
Thanks.

In this day and age when we in the west are supposed to have freedom of religion what exactly is blasphemy??

After all there is a Trident submarine named the USS (City) of Corpus Christie.

Imagine that a vesel capable of killing hundreds of millions people being called the Body of Christ
